Michael Palin Lights Up Norwich: An Evening of Stories, Insight and Humour
Norwich enjoyed a cultural treat on 28 May 2026 when Michael Palin arrived at UEA for an evening in conversation with Nina Nannar, presented through a collaboration between Norfolk Screen and the University of East Anglia. The sold out event centred on his latest book, Michael Palin in Nigeria, a vivid and deeply human account of his journey through one of the world’s most complex and fast‑moving nations. From the moment he stepped on stage, Michael held the room with the warmth, wit and generosity that have defined his career, moving easily between reflections on the book, memories from his travels, and stories from his decades of creative work. Michael spoke about the energy and contradictions of Nigeria, the people he met, and the challenges and joys of documenting a country undergoing rapid change.
He also delighted the audience with stories from his Monty Python years, sharing how the group’s creative chaos shaped him, and how that same spirit of curiosity carried into his travel documentaries and later screen roles, including his acclaimed performance in The Death of Stalin. There was a lovely moment when he spoke about Small Prophets, reflecting on the creative process behind it and how projects like these continue to surprise and energise him.

After the conversation, Michael stayed for a book signing.
For Norfolk Screen and UEA, the event was a proud moment a celebration of partnership, creativity and cultural engagement in the region. It was an enlightening evening that blended humour, storytelling and reflection.
